to public transport systems are always a good thing. Not only is it
convenient for the public, but also it should see an increased number
of people using public transport instead of taking their car out of the
garage. The other day, Serco Metrolink converted the metrolink interchange-only platform to a full working station, enabling access to the elevated platform from the ground below. Passengers can now get off and on to the platform on the Bury to Altrincham line after a £250,000 redevelopment. Whether or not the expense will be worth its while remains to be seen, but for those that know the area; the new entrance has been built at the station, close to developments Timber Wharf, Boxworks and Moho, and ticket machines on the network have been altered to include the station. Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd, who lobbied for the station, said: "It has always struck me and residents as bizarre that passengers couldn't access it from ground level. If they wanted to use the Metrolink they would have to go into Manchester first, even though there was a stop on their doorstep." The Greater Manchester Police aren't 'too happy' about it though; "We are not too happy with the approach to the station in particular. We would have liked to have seen even more improvements," said Deputy Chief Constable Alan Green. He continued, "It is quite secluded and more CCTV, lighting and human presence would be helpful." But rest assured Constable, CCTV cameras and extra lighting HAVE been installed and a secure park and ride car park is planned. Everyone's happy, for once. West brakes the mould and got the chance last night to tell America how
their country is. The rapper was among the celebs and singers
participating in the one-hour special, produced by NBC News and run on
the NBC broadcast network, as well as MSNBC and CNBC, to raise money
for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund due to the devastation
left by Hurricane Katrina. West was not scheduled to perform; but was one of the celebs who would read from scripts prepared by the network about the impact of Katrina on southern Louisiana and Mississippi. Kanye West and Mike Myers had been paired up to appear about halfway through the show. Their assignment: Take turns reading a script describing the breach in the levees around New Orleans. Myers started: The landscape of the city has changed dramatically, tragically and perhaps irreversibly. There is now over 25 feet of water where there was once city streets and thriving neighborhoods. (Myers throws to West, who looked extremely nervous in his designer rugby shirt and white pants) West goes off-script: I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us! (West throws back to Myers, who looks dazed and confused) Myers continues with his script: And subtle, but in many ways even more profoundly devastating, is the lasting damage to the survivors' will to rebuild and remain in the area. The destruction of the spirit of the people of southern Louisiana and Mississippi may end up being the most tragic loss of all. (With nothing more to say, Myers finishes reading... but not before Kanye West concludes.) West: George Bush doesn't care about black people! Myers: Please call ... At which point someone at NBC News finally regained control of the joystick and cut over to Chris Tucker, who started right in with more scripted nonsense. A statement was issued by the station later on that night which read: Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion. And what do I think? We need more people like Kanye West in the public eye. People who aren't going to kiss the ass of everyone and devoid telling people what the true situation is. Take a step back and look at it yourself; the coverage of Katrina here in the UK has held the same racial bias that it seems to have done in the US - and nobody has batted an eyelid. Kanye West. Good man. what has happened in New Orleans (USA) as a result of Hurricane Katrina
is devastating; there is but a part of me that's quite impressed with
the situation. Maybe it's the Brit inside me that likes the notion that
everything has gone wrong - after all; we ourselves are largely a
nation of failures who applaud and praise 'shittyness'. Or maybe it's
the Brit inside me that likes the notion that everything has gone wrong
for America. See; whilst Tony Blair is George Bush's bitch and asks "how high?" when told to jump, the UK as a general outlook doesn't share Blair's view on Bush, and America in general. Viewed through the eyes of the average Joe Public in the United Kingdom, America tends to be seen as the spoilt, cocky kid of the class who not only has everything, but also bullies others to get its own way. A kid that no other classmate would dare stand up to for fear of being stricken down by the bully, with the aid of his pals. And so, with that in mind, to see a nation as big and cocky as America brought to its knees against something it failed to care about is quite satisfying. The hurricane, the flooding, the damage, the force of nature itself - followed by the fear-stricken American citizens who have turned to looting, violence, gun-fire and even death - a performance that proves America is not as strong and sturdy as its made out to be, and that 'The American Dream' can be shattered. Whilst a heartfelt gesture goes out to those victims of the disaster, a smile stems to the face to read of Bush implementing systems reminiscent of those enforced in Iraq to counter suicide bombings - but this time against his own people. "Zero Tolerance" - shoot to kill - a dictator attitude in its own light. Looking forward, Bush pleas to save New Orleans - a target which will be no means a stroll through the park, but should he pull through - is that enough to deem Bush of his leadership status? After all, weren't the warning signs there already - but ignored? Hurricane Katrina should be a wake up call for President Bush on the need for urgent US action to tackle climate change the world over. The hurricane is one of the worst natural disasters America has ever faced and is a stark reminder of what scientists predicted will happen as a result of human induced climate change, and what Bush himself failed to agree on at the G8 Summit. Although there is at present no means by which to tell whether this particular storm was due to human induced global warming, the devastation it has caused is consistent with the projections generated by climate change models that suggest such storms will become more severe as the world warms up. Not only has this been scientifically proven, but even films such as The Day After Tomorrow have explored such situations, and the tsunam of last year combined with recent events highlights this. So, amid the trail and destruction left by Hurricane Katrina, maybe something good did come out of the circumstances... Not only may Bush realise that action needs to be taken on climate change, but that America is a nation that can be brought to its knees, despite how hard it blows its own trumpet. I was in work; and at dinner, took a trip to 'the big HMV' in town and
bought some music. I don't really have the money to - but since I get
paid in 15 days, I figured I may-as-well... I can live with been skint
for two weeks. So, no albums for me - but 7" Singles. The beauty that is vinyl. Here's what I bought: Boa Vs Python by Test-icicles (view at Amazon.co.uk) It was a fair while ago that I first heard of the Test-icicles (not to be read as Testicles) when Tom Vek was the man who recommended them to me through the ways and means of the print magazine Dazed & Confused. I'd heard of them before this; but never bothered to check them out... and now I have a single; both sides of which are great. Forget Myself by Elbow (view at Amazon.co.uk) Taken from the forthcoming album 'Leaders Of The Free World' Side A is a great track which, on first listen, sounds like Elbow's usual vibe - but with a bit of a twist. I like it. I've not yet listened to the B Side. Keep Pushin On by Yeti (view at Amazon.co.uk) I first seen Yeti when they supported Razorlight at the Manchester Apollo towards the start of this year, and they were absolutely great. I remember them saying something along the lines of "Last week we were playing pubs to crowds of about 20. This week, we're playing arenas to crowds like the size of yourselves" and this single makes you realise why they should be. Both the A and B sides are magnificent. Buy it. Smoke It by The Dandy Warhols (view at Amazon.co.uk) Now; whilst I like The Dandy Warhols, I first seen them live supporting David Bowie (at the MEN Arena) - and so the whole vibe was taken away from the band because everyone was hyped up to see Bowie. I don't think anyone knew who they were, until they played Bohemian Like You. Anyway; the centre of this record hasn't been punched out right - so my record player can't play it. D'oh. Fuck Forever by Babyshambles (view at Amazon.co.uk) This week I have mostly been listening to Pete Doherty, and now Babyshambles. Fuck Forever is a great track which makes me wet my pants in anticipation for their album later this year. The B Side is bitchin' too. Anywho, that leaves me with a grand total of £20 (I think) to last me for the next 15 days. Good job the gig I want to go to on Sunday is free entry. The Maple State at The Tiger Lounge, Manchester.
